COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this new course is to create a space in which consulting and training professionals (working primarily in the development, and specifically in the micro and small-enterprise development sector) can learn how to improve performance of their companies, firms or departments dealing with consultancy and training. They will upgrade their professional standards and practices and prepare a strategy for improved sustainability of the unit they are managing. The course draws on ILO practices and experiences accumulated as a result of organizations wide engagements in management and small business development. It is practical in nature, providing real tools and insights, and drawing out the wisdom and experiences already gained by members of the group. AS a management course, it is designed to breakdown participants’ perspective, management potential and resource base, not just to convey technical topics. As a practical course, it will focus on applying course content to participants’ actual challenges and opportunities in order to improve the performance of their companies or units. The course will also assist the managers in identifying areas that they would like to explore in more details in the future.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the program, participants will have strengthened their leadership and managerial capacity to improve the functioning of the consulting firms they are managing or consulting and training departments under their supervision. They will be better able to develop and market competitive services and products; reduce their organization’s vulnerability to risks; retain staff and clients; manage healthy growth; and enhance productivity and efficiency.

The course has four specific objectives:

1. To broaden understanding of the various functions that contribute to the successful performance of the company;

2. To supply a portfolio of the tools that can assist managers to strengthen the performances of the unit or company;

3. To stimulate the sharing of experiences and strategies for meeting current challenges and

4. To expose management experiences from other parts of the world and inspire more innovative thinking about what might be possible in the local environment.

FORMAT AND METHODOLOGY:

“Turin Learning Approach” will be applied in this course. Dynamic, interactive and learner-centered methodologies will be used to convey and stimulate the exchange of experience. Lectures will alternate with practical exercises, discussions, group work, knowledge sharing methodologies, case studies, and individual assignments.

The course is designed as a practical program with embedded exchange and case-study analysis applied throughout the week. At the end of each day, participants will apply the main learning to their real situation, finalizing the Action Plans on the last day of the training.

COURSE CONTENT:

Day 1: INTRODUCTION, MANAGEMENT MANDATE

Introduction to sustainable development goals, entrepreneurship and MSME development, rural development and financial inclusion.

Management consulting and training: what is your mandate.

Consulting and training: business models, structuring and organizational options.

Day 2: STRATEGY, CLIENTS AND STAKEHOLDERS

Strategic directions and vision. Mapping stakeholders, clients, and donors, current trends and priorities of donors and development agencies. Private-public partnerships. Clarifying targets markets and profiling selected segments.

Day 3: PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Portfolio review. Growth strategies, products/services diversification, managing growth.

Open space and exchange: Products, services, tools

Day 4: MANAGING FOR IMPROVED EFFICIENCY

Costing, pricing, sales and resources mobilization. Marketing of consulting services. Planning and managing financial performance. Operational and financial control. Improving the efficiency of operations. Quality management. Assignments, managing staff performances and managing consultants, knowledge management.

Day 5: BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Developing an improvement plan

Peer review and feedback

Action plan

Closure of the course. (by 4 pm).
